Cambridge City F.C. has always held a special place in my heart. As a local football club, it represents more than just the game; it’s part of the community’s fabric. Yet, for years, I hesitated to paint the club because they lacked a permanent home. After leaving their historic City Ground on Milton Road, the team played at St Ives Town and Histon F.C. Now, they have finally settled into a new stadium in Sawston. This move inspired me to create a painting capturing this fresh chapter in the club’s story. Soon, I will be releasing fine art prints of this work, produced locally in Pampisford, just a short bus ride from the new ground.
The Journey of Cambridge City F.C.
Cambridge City F.C. has a rich history, but the past few decades have been marked by uncertainty over their home ground. The original Cambridge City Ground, also known as Milton Road, was a place where I occasionally watched matches. It was a convenient spot on my side of the city, and the club’s beer festival there over 30 years ago remains a fond memory. After leaving Milton Road, the club played at other venues, including St Ives Town and Histon F.C., which made it harder for local fans to keep up.
The new stadium in Sawston is about six miles outside Cambridge, which stretches the idea of the club being truly “Cambridge City.” Despite this, the new ground looks fantastic and offers a fresh start. Every time I pass it on the bus to Pampisford, where my prints are made, I remind myself to finally get the painting done. Now that it’s finished, I’m excited to collect the first batch of prints on my next trip.
Painting the New Stadium
Creating this painting was a rewarding challenge. I wanted to capture the spirit of the club and the fresh energy of their new home. The stadium’s design is modern yet welcoming, reflecting the club’s hopes for stability and growth. Painting it allowed me to reconnect with the club’s history and imagine its future.
Producing fine art prints locally in Pampisford adds another layer of meaning. It feels right to have the artwork printed near the new stadium, linking the creative process with the club’s new chapter. The prints will allow fans and locals to celebrate Cambridge City F.C. in a tangible way, even if they don’t attend matches regularly.

What the New Stadium Means for the Club and Community
Having a permanent home is crucial for any football club. For Cambridge City F.C., the new stadium in Sawston represents stability and a chance to build a stronger future. It offers better facilities for players and fans and a base to grow the club’s presence.
For the community, the stadium is a new landmark. It may be a bit outside the city, but it brings football back to a consistent location. This can help attract new supporters and create a hub for local events beyond match days.

If you’re a fan or local resident, there are several ways to celebrate the club’s new home and support its future:
