Creating art that connects with a place and its people brings a unique satisfaction. Recently, I completed a painting of Histon FC’s stadium, a project I had wanted to do for a long time. This painting is more than just a depiction of a football ground; it reflects the local spirit and personal stories that make the club and its surroundings special to me.

Why Histon FC Inspired Me

Histon FC is not just a football club; it’s part of the local community I live in. Every time I travel into Cambridge, I pass the ground on the guided bus. That glimpse sparked a desire to capture the stadium’s atmosphere on watercolour paper. The club’s history, the fans, and the local connections all made it a meaningful subject.

Painting a local landmark allows me to celebrate the place I call home. It also gives others a chance to see the stadium through a fresh perspective, one that highlights its character beyond just a sports venue.

Adding Personal Touches to the Painting

One of the most rewarding parts of this project was including people who have a real connection to Histon FC. Clair, my Royal Mail postie, shared with me that she once played for the ladies’ team. That story stayed with me, so I decided to feature her in the painting, placing her centre stage. Alongside Clair is Frank, her sausage dog,

The Process of Creating the Painting

Starting the painting involved several steps:

  • Research and Observation: I spent time observing the stadium from the guided bus and walking around the area to understand its layout and atmosphere.. I went to the trouble of having a morning off to take preparatory photos. Theres an awful 'We Buy Any Car' Portacabin right outside the main stand which looks ghastly so I actually reverted to some older photos I took about 5 years ago and worked from them and the new ones to create the composition I was after.

  • Sketching: Initial sketches helped me plan the composition, making sure Clair and Frank had a natural place in the scene.

  • Painting: Layer by layer, I built up the colours and details, focusing on capturing the textures of the stands and the surrounding environment.

  • Final Touches: Adding Clair and Frank required careful attention to detail to ensure they fit seamlessly into the scene.

This process took patience and dedication, but the result was worth it.

Sharing the Artwork with the Community

Once the original painting was finished, the next step was to make it available to others. I plan to offer framed prints, posters, canvas prints, and mugs featuring the artwork. These items will be available in the shop section of my website in the coming months.

The original painting will be professionally scanned by printers located in Pampisford, just outside Cambridge. This ensures the reproductions maintain the quality and detail of the original work.

Why Local Art Matters

Creating art that reflects local places and people helps build a sense of belonging. It connects residents with their surroundings and celebrates stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. For me, painting Histon FC’s stadium was a way to honor the community and share its spirit with a wider audience.

Local art also supports small businesses and artists. By purchasing prints or merchandise, people contribute to keeping these creative efforts alive.

Looking Ahead

With this painting complete, I feel a sense of accomplishment. It’s a project I had on my to-do list for a long time, and now it’s done. I look forward to sharing the prints and merchandise with those who appreciate Histon FC and the local community.

If you’re interested in supporting local art or want to learn more about this painting, keep an eye on the shop section of my website. I hope this work brings a bit of Histon’s spirit into your home.
