Rugby has always been more than just a sport to me. It’s a source of inspiration, a connection to communities, and a rich subject for artistic expression. Recently, I completed a significant milestone: painting all the clubs currently competing in the Super League. This project has been a rewarding journey, capturing the spirit and character of each club’s home ground. Now, I’m preparing to shift my focus to the English Premiership rugby union clubs, starting with Harlequins. This post shares insights into my creative process, the challenges and joys of painting rugby league art, and what’s coming next for my rugby memorabilia collection.

Rugby League Art. Capturing the Essence of Super League Clubs

Painting the stadiums and grounds of Super League clubs was a unique challenge. Each venue has its own personality, shaped by history, fans, and the surrounding environment. My goal was to create hand-painted scenes that not only represent the physical space but also evoke the passion and energy of rugby league.

For example, Leigh Centurions, recently promoted to the Super League, have a vibrant fan base and a stadium that reflects their community spirit. While I haven’t painted Leigh Sports Village yet, it’s on my list for the near future. The anticipation of capturing this new addition to the league adds excitement to my work.

These paintings are more than just images; they are rugby league gifts for fans who want to celebrate their club in a unique way. Whether it’s a framed fine art print or a ceramic mug printed with a stadium scene, these pieces serve as lasting memorabilia for supporters.

The Variety of Rugby Memorabilia I Offer

One of the most rewarding parts of this project has been seeing how fans respond to different types of rugby memorabilia. I offer a wide range of print options and sizes to suit various tastes and spaces:

  • Framed fine art prints: Perfect for collectors who want a high-quality, ready-to-hang piece.

  • Framed and unframed canvas prints: These add texture and depth, ideal for living rooms or offices.

  • Posters: Affordable and versatile, great for decorating fan caves or bedrooms.

  • Ceramic mugs: Dishwasher and microwave safe, these bring rugby art into everyday life.

Each product is designed to celebrate rugby league in a way that feels personal and authentic. Fans can choose how they want to display their passion, whether on a wall or in their morning routine.

Taking a Break and Looking Ahead

After completing the Super League series, I’m taking a short break to recharge. Painting every club has been intense but fulfilling. This pause will help me return with fresh eyes and new ideas for the next phase of my rugby art journey.

The next step is to start painting rugby union clubs from the English Premiership. This shift will bring new challenges and opportunities. The stadiums and clubs in the Premiership have different architectural styles and histories compared to rugby league grounds. For instance, Harlequins’ home ground offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, making it an exciting first subject.

Why Rugby Art Matters to Fans

Rugby fans often look for ways to express their loyalty beyond just attending matches or wearing jerseys. Rugby prints and memorabilia provide a tangible connection to their favorite clubs and moments. Hand-painted scenes add a layer of craftsmanship and emotion that mass-produced items can’t match.

These artworks become conversation starters, gifts, and cherished keepsakes. They celebrate the culture of rugby and the pride fans feel for their teams. Whether it’s a gift for a lifelong supporter or a new fan’s first piece of rugby memorabilia, these items carry meaning.

How I Approach Painting Rugby Clubs

My process starts with research and visits to each stadium. I take photos, note architectural details, and observe how the light interacts with the structures at different times of day. This groundwork helps me create accurate and lively paintings.

Next, I sketch the composition, focusing on balance and perspective. I aim to highlight features that make each stadium unique, such as the shape of the stands, the colors of the seats, or the surrounding landscape.

The painting itself involves layers of color and texture. I use acrylics for their versatility and vibrancy. Each brushstroke is deliberate, building depth and atmosphere. The goal is to capture not just the physical space but the feeling of being there on match day.

What Fans Can Expect Next

As I begin the Premiership series, I plan to maintain the same level of detail and passion. Fans of rugby union clubs will soon have access to the same range of rugby gifts and memorabilia that rugby league supporters have enjoyed.

I also plan to expand the product range based on feedback. Ideas include:

  • Limited edition prints with signed certificates

  • Customizable options for personal messages or dates

  • Rugby-themed calendars featuring different clubs throughout the year

These additions will help fans celebrate rugby in new and meaningful ways.

Supporting Rugby Through Art

By creating and sharing rugby league art and rugby memorabilia, I hope to support the sport’s community. Art connects people, preserves memories, and celebrates culture. Rugby fans deserve high-quality, authentic items that reflect their passion.

If you support a club in the championship or the Premiership, don’t worry. I will return to paint all those clubs in time. Every fan will have a chance to own a piece of rugby history through my work.

Rugby is more than a game; it’s a source of inspiration that fuels creativity. My journey from painting Super League clubs to Premiership grounds is just beginning. Stay tuned for new rugby prints and gifts that bring the spirit of the sport into your home.
