There is something special about the way Harrods looks during the cold months, especially in the rush before Christmas. The warm glow from its windows and the steady flow of people create a scene full of life and memories. I painted this iconic London landmark earlier this year, and now, after some time in the pipeline, my painting of Harrods has gone into print. This piece holds a special place in my heart because it captures not just a building, but a feeling—a nostalgic reminder of a time when shopping was a physical experience, full of warmth and anticipation.

The Story Behind the Painting

I started this painting at the beginning of the year, inspired by the contrast between the cold outside and the inviting warmth inside Harrods. The scene reminded me of the busy streets filled with shoppers, the excitement building as Christmas approaches. In recent years, many department stores across the UK have closed permanently, making Harrods even more of a symbol of a fading tradition.

This painting is more than just a representation of a building. It reflects a moment in time when people still enjoyed the ritual of visiting stores, feeling the textures of products, and sharing the experience with others. The nostalgia in this piece comes from those memories, and I hope it brings a similar feeling to anyone who sees it.

The Materials and Technique

I chose gouache as my medium for this painting because of its rich, opaque qualities that allow for vibrant colours and fine detail. Gouache works beautifully on Saunders Waterford watercolour paper, which is known for its high quality and durability. This paper comes from St Cuthberts Mill in Somerset, a top-tier choice for artists who want their work to last and maintain its brilliance over time.

Using gouache on Saunders Waterford paper gave me the ability to capture the subtle glow of the lights, the texture of the building’s facade, and the movement of the crowd. The layering technique with gouache helped create depth and warmth, which are essential to conveying the atmosphere of Harrods during the festive season.

Why Harrods Matters Today

Harrods is not just a department store; it is a London landmark with a rich history. It has stood the test of time while many other famous stores have disappeared. In an age where online shopping dominates, Harrods remains a symbol of the traditional shopping experience.

This painting serves as a tribute to that experience. It reminds us of the joy found in wandering through aisles, discovering unique items, and soaking in the festive spirit. For those who have fond memories of shopping at Harrods or simply admire its grandeur, this artwork offers a way to keep that connection alive.

Bringing Iconic Landmarks Back to Life

In recent months, I haven’t painted as many iconic landmarks as I would have liked. This Harrods painting marks a return to capturing well-known places that hold meaning for many people. Painting landmarks allows me to explore the stories behind these locations and share them through art.

I plan to create more paintings of famous sites soon, each with its own story and atmosphere. For now, I am proud to share this piece of Harrods with you, hoping it brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia to your space.

How to Choose the Right Print for Your Space

When selecting a print, consider the room where you want to display it and the mood you want to create. Here are some tips:

  • Living room or lounge: A framed fine art print or canvas can become a focal point, adding sophistication and charm.

  • Kitchen or dining area: A printed ceramic mug with the Harrods painting can add a daily touch of art to your routine.

  • Office or study: Unframed posters offer a modern, flexible option that can be easily changed or moved.

Each print type offers a different way to enjoy the painting, so think about how you want to experience this nostalgic scene.

Final Thoughts on the Harrods Painting

This painting captures more than just a building; it captures a feeling of warmth, tradition, and the joy of the holiday season. It reminds us of a time when shopping was an event, a shared experience that brought people together. As many department stores close their doors, Harrods stands as a beacon of that past.
