Some football grounds feel alive before anyone has even kicked a ball. You hear the turnstiles click, smell the onions from a burger van, squeeze through a narrow concourse, then climb steps that generations of fans have climbed before. The view might be awkward. The seat might have less legroom than a bus shelter. The toilets might be best described as character building. Still, plenty of fans would not swap it. Abbey Stadium has stood as a familiar landmark in Cambridge for decades. Recently, I completed a new painting of this iconic home ground of Cambridge United. While visiting the stadium to take preparatory photos, I noticed that not much had changed in the eight years since my last painting.
